Ask anyone who works a regular 9-to-5: a bank holiday in late December feels like winning a tiny lottery. It breaks up the “gray zone” between Christmas and New Year’s, when time turns into a puddle of fog. You lose track of what day it is. Tuesday? Thursday? Who cares?
I once got so confused, I showed up for a Zoom call in my dressing gown. My boss laughed and said, “It’s Boxing Day, you dolt.” And that’s the magic—the world expects you to be a little hazy. It’s built into the calendar.
What If It’s Not a Bank Holiday Where You Are?
If you’re reading this in the United States or parts of Europe, I’m sorry. December 26th is just a day. You’ll have to go to work. But take heart: you can still celebrate in spirit. Email your colleagues a photo of a sad-looking sandwich. Claim it’s a “Boxing Day tribute.”

Or better yet, fake it. Tell your boss you need to “observe a family ritual” (eating cold stuffing in silence). They might not buy it, but it’s worth a try. Worst case, you get a funny story for next year’s holiday party.
