Before they were global pop-rock overlords, the band—Matty Healy, Adam Hann, Ross MacDonald, and George Daniel—were teenagers in Wilmslow, just messing around. They swapped band names like other kids swapped Pokémon cards: Bigsleep, Talkhouse, Drive Like I Do. Nothing stuck. Everything felt very lame.
Then, Matty stumbled upon a book his dad owned: On The Road by Jack Kerouac? No. Howl by Allen Ginsberg? Warmer. Actually, it was a book of late-60s beat poetry, specifically “The 1975” by a writer nobody’s heard of. The poem was a short, scratchy, pre-digital bit of nonsense about existential dread and bad sex. But those two numbers? They just looked good on paper.
“It felt right,” Matty has said, in that way famous people say airy nothing-answers. But he also admits it was “a bit of a joke.” They thought it sounded punk. Or ironic. Or both. They definitely did not think anyone would actually remember it.
The “Happy Accident” That Started a Cult
Here’s the kicker—and the part that makes this whole thing feel like a prank by the universe. The band started using the name purely as a placeholder. They had a gig coming up. Needed a flyer. Matty grabbed the date from the beat poem. Done. They fully intended to change it later. They never did.
“We were just like, ‘Yeah, we’ll be called The 1975 for this show,’” guitarist Adam Hann once said. “And then we just… forgot.” Imagine naming your band “Tuesday’s Sandwich” and then accidentally selling out Madison Square Garden. That’s the energy here. The name is a monument to glorious, lazy apathy.

This fact alone drives new fans insane. They dig for deep meaning: “Is it a reference to the year punk died?” “Is Matty secretly a time traveler?” Nope. It’s basically the band equivalent of a friend calling you by the wrong name for so long that everyone just goes with it.
