The musical is set in the fictional village of Anatevka, which is loosely based on the real-life village of Botsi in Ukraine. Anatevka is a small, close-knit community where everyone knows each other's business, and it's a place where tradition and custom are deeply ingrained. It's a bit like the Wizard of Oz, where everyone looks out for each other and the community comes together to celebrate and support one another.
But Anatevka is also a place of poverty and hardship, where the characters struggle to make ends meet and face many challenges. It's like the Wild West, where people have to be tough and resourceful to survive, but instead of cowboys and outlaws, you have Torah scholars and matchmakers. The contrast between the rich traditions and the harsh realities of life in Anatevka is what makes the story so compelling and relatable.
The setting of Fiddler On The Roof is also heavily influenced by the author's own experiences as a Jewish person living in Russia during a time of great turmoil and persecution. The story is a powerful commentary on the human condition, and it explores themes of identity, community, and resilience in the face of adversity. It's like a time machine that takes you back to a different era, but the themes and emotions are still universal and relatable today.
