Let’s talk about why they’re famous. You’ve probably heard that the tarantula hawk has one of the most painful stings on Earth, ranked just below the bullet ant. Entomologist Justin Schmidt described the sting as "blinding, fierce, shockingly electric." He said it feels like a running hairdryer has been dropped into your bathwater. Laugh all you want, but the man dedicated his life to being stung for science.

But here’s the hilarious part: they are extremely non-aggressive towards people. I’ve seen videos of guys picking them up by a wing, and the wasp just hangs there, looking mildly inconvenienced. They save their venom for their namesake prey. To a human, they’re like the neighbor who owns a huge, scary dog but never lets it off the leash. They just want to find a spider, lay an egg on it, and go about their business. Your lemonade and Netflix binge are completely safe—unless you step on one barefoot. That would be a bad day.
