The Ancestral Puebloans first settled in the area around the 6th century, and over the centuries, they built some of the most incredible stone structures you've ever seen. I mean, these guys were like the original engineers – they built multi-story dwellings into the sides of cliffs, complete with kivas (that's a fancy word for "ceremonial rooms") and plumbing systems. Talk about being ahead of their time!
But, as with all good things, the Ancestral Puebloans eventually vacated the premises – and by "vacated," I mean they mysteriously disappeared. It's like they just vanished into thin air – leaving behind only their incredible cliff dwellings and a whole lot of questions. Spooky, right?
Fast forward to the late 19th century, when a couple of curious cowboys stumbled upon the cliff dwellings while out searching for stray cattle. And, let me tell you, they were blown away – I mean, who wouldn't be? The cliff dwellings were like nothing they'd ever seen before – it was like stumbling upon a ancient city in the middle of nowhere.
