Honestly, you don’t need to be a horse racing expert to care about this date. The Grand National is like the Super Bowl of awkward office sweepstakes and family banter. Remember last year, when Uncle Bob picked a horse because it was “the colour of his favourite old jumper”? That’s the magic. You don’t need a betting license to join in; you just need a fiver and a good excuse to have a glass of wine at 4 PM.
It’s also the day your social media feed transforms into a hilarious mess of misplaced confidence. You’ll see your quiet neighbour post a photo of a horse with a name like “Rainbow Dash’s Revenge” and caption it “This is my winner!” Everyone becomes a pundit for the day. That’s why you need to know the time—so you don’t miss the collective laugh when the favourite stumbles over a fence.
The Build-Up Is Half The Fun
Planning your afternoon around the race is a national sport in itself. You’ve got the first race at around 1:45 PM, which is your cue to start the nibbles. By 4:00 PM, the tension is like waiting for the kettle to boil when you’re hangry. The actual Grand National takes place after a few warm-up races, so don’t click away too soon. It’s like a great TV series—the pilot matters, but the finale is everything.
I had a mate once who thought the race was at 3 PM. He went to the shops for milk, came back, and the whole thing was over. He spent the rest of the evening listening to highlights on the radio while his wife re-won the sweepstake. Don’t be that person. Set an alarm on your phone. Write it on the calendar in permanent marker. Tell your boss you have a “dentist appointment.” This is important life admin.
