The complete predicate is the verb plus all its buddies—like “slept peacefully in her crib.” The simple predicate is just the star: slept.
What Is A Simple Predicate
Think of a pizza. The simple predicate is the cheese. The complete predicate is the cheese, sauce, pepperoni, and that sad little olive you’ll pick off.
You don’t need to remember the fancy part. Just grab the cheese—the verb—and you’re golden.
A Little Story from Tuesday
Yesterday, my neighbor yelled, “Your cat escaped!” One word. That’s the entire simple predicate. It was urgent, powerful, and made me run outside in my slippers.
If she’d said, “Your cat escaped through the broken gate,” the simple predicate is still escaped. The rest is just bonus drama.
See how that works? The simple predicate is the nucleus of the news. Everything else is just icing.
