Let’s break it down: grocery stores and gas stations are usually open, so you won’t starve or get stranded. Many drugstores stay open too, which means you can still buy snacks and a weird greeting card at 9 PM.
Movie theaters and bowling alleys? Absolutely open. So if you want to watch a superhero movie or roll a strike in your socks, go for it. That’s the kind of labor—fun labor—we can all support.
And here’s a pro tip: local coffee shops and bakeries often stay open because they know you need caffeine. So grab a latte, find a park bench, and just be for a while. That’s not laziness—that’s patriotism for your own well-being.
How to Make Labor Day Epic
Start by ignoring your to-do list. Seriously. Burn it, metaphorically. Then, pick one thing you want to do, not what you should do. Call a friend you haven’t heard from in months. Ride a bike with no destination. Make a weird sandwich.

If you’re feeling adventurous, check your town’s event calendar. Many places host parades, concerts, or fireworks on Labor Day weekend. You could stumble into live music and a funnel cake—basically a perfect evening.
And if you’re stuck at home? Perfect. That means you have time to learn something new. Watch a documentary about ancient Egypt. Try a 10-minute yoga video. Read a chapter of a book you’ve been “meaning to get to.”
