So, when a story is told in third person omniscient, the narrator has a kind of all-seeing power. They can jump into the minds of any character, at any time, and see what's going on. It's like having a magic camera that can zoom in and out of different characters' thoughts and feelings. But what's really interesting is that it can also create a sense of distance between the reader and the characters.
Imagine you're watching a movie, and the camera is hovering above the characters, showing you everything that's happening. That's kind of what third person omniscient does, but instead of just seeing the action, you're also getting a glimpse into the characters' inner worlds. It's like having a private conversation with each character, where they're sharing their deepest secrets and fears with you. But how does this affect the way we experience the story?
One of the coolest things about third person omniscient is that it lets the narrator play with time and space. They can jump back and forth between different characters, and even move around in time, showing you flashbacks or flashforwards. It's like having a time machine that lets you see everything that's happened, and everything that's going to happen. But what does this do to our sense of tension and suspense?
When a story is told in third person omniscient, the narrator can create a sense of irony or contrast between what the characters know, and what the reader knows. It's like having a wink-wink relationship with the narrator, where they're sharing a secret with you that the characters don't know. But what's the point of this, exactly? Is it just to create a sense of superiority in the reader, or is there something more going on?
