Because if you ever call the SSA—and you will, because lines are long and hold music is a punishment invented by a sadist—they’re going to ask for your claim number. If you say, "Uh, isn’t it just my SSN?" they’ll sigh like you just asked them to explain quantum physics in a drive-thru.

That claim number is their cheat code. Without it, they have to shuffle through your life story like a detective in a slow-motion crime drama. With it, they can pull up your file in seconds and say, "Yes, your monthly payment is coming. Stop worrying." It saves you time, anger, and the urge to throw your phone out the window.
And here’s a funny thing: you might have multiple claim numbers if you’ve applied for different benefits at different times. It’s like collecting Pokémon cards, but instead of Charizard, you get a slip of paper that says "Survivor Benefits." My uncle Gale has three. He calls them his "golden tickets."
How to find yours
Look at any letter from the SSA—the ones that make you think, "Oh no, did I do something wrong?" That number right at the top, usually next to your name, is your claim number. It’s printed in that serious government font that feels like it should be on a wanted poster.
You can also find it on your Social Security award letter, which is that fancy document they send when you’re approved for anything. It’s the one you might frame if you’re a little bit of a dork (no judgment).
If you’re really lost, just log into your My Social Security account online. After you answer four questions about your first pet, your mother’s maiden name, and the street you lived on in 1997, it will show you your claim number with a little smiley face emoji (okay, no emoji, but it might as well).
