Perception plays a huge role in determining an artwork's value. Take, for example, the infamous Duchamp's Fountain - a urinal signed 'R. Mutt' that sparked a huge debate about what constitutes art. Is it the artist's intention, the viewer's interpretation, or something else entirely?
The art market is a wild and wacky place, where values can fluctuate like the stock market. One day, a piece is worth thousands; the next, it's virtually worthless. It's all about supply and demand, baby!
But value in art isn't just about the benjamins. It's also about the cultural significance of a piece - how it reflects or challenges the status quo. Think of Guernica by Picasso, a powerful anti-war statement that still resonates today.
