The amendment adds a tiny, sneaky clause: "...except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted." Read that again. Slavery is illegal... unless you’re a convicted criminal. That’s like saying "No more cake... unless you’re on a diet, in which case, eat as much as you want." It’s weird, right?
