Here’s a funny fact: the home has its own hairdressing salon on-site. It’s called "The Salon" and it’s basically a VIP experience where gossip is the currency. You can get a perm and a manicure without leaving the building. It’s like going to a spa, but your neighbors are knitting you a scarf.
Another delight? The menu. Residents vote on meals. Yes, you read that right. There are actual ballots for "Fish and Chips Friday" versus "Roast Beef Sunday." The winner is always a surprise—last month, toad-in-the-hole had a surprise victory. Democracy tastes delicious.

Need a laugh? Ask about the "Grumble Club." It’s an unofficial group that meets every Tuesday to complain about the weather—but only if they can do it over ice cream. It’s the spiciest meeting of the week.
Why This Place Is Just Fun to Talk About
Upton Dene breaks the mold because it focuses on personality. The staff are trained to remember weird facts about residents—like who prefers Earl Grey over English Breakfast, or who hates the color beige. The place is seriously allergic to beige carpets. They use patterns and colors that pop.
Even the nursing care feels playful. They have a "Mobility Dance-Off" for physio sessions. Residents in wheelchairs join residents with walkers for a synchronized shimmy. It’s chaotic, it’s loud, and it’s absolutely brilliant. The goal isn’t just health; it’s happiness.
Let’s also talk about the pets. There’s a resident cat named Mr. Whiskers, who has his own visiting schedule. He strolls into rooms like he owns the place—because, honestly, he does. He’s been known to sit in on bingo games. Nobody wins when Mr. Whiskers steals the bingo chips, but everyone laughs.
