In many tropical countries where bananas grow, refrigeration is almost unheard of. They just pick them fresh every day. In the West, we buy two weeks’ worth at once because we’re busy and impatient. That’s the real problem—not the fridge, but our shopping habits.
In Japan, there’s a trendy, expensive banana called the “Okayama” that’s grown in a super cold environment to make it extra sweet. They intentionally chill the plant. So while we worry about chilling our bananas, some farmers do it on purpose for profit and flavor.
It all comes down to intention: are you storing a banana for a recipe, or for snacking? Your fridge can be a tool, not a villain.
