Every wine taster has a story of getting it dead wrong. Mine was at a dinner party where I confidently said, “I’m getting notes of wild raspberry and leather.” The host stared at me and said, “It’s a non-alcoholic grape juice, Dave.” I still feel the shame. We’ve all been there.
Another friend once described a wine as “having a nice finish like a marathon runner’s shower.” Nobody knew what that meant, but we all nodded. Sometimes, the name is just a vibe.

What Should You Call Yourself?
If you’re reading this, you’re already a wine taster. You can be a “weekend sipper,” a “value vintner,” or a “bottle buddy.” The official name doesn’t matter as long as you enjoy the journey—including the cheap bottles that taste like regret.
The best name I ever heard was from a retiree who called himself a “grape cowboy.” He never used a spit bucket. He just rode into the sunset—one box of Cabernet at a time. That’s the spirit.
