The location of area code 218 is in the state of Minnesota. Area code 218 covers the northern and northwestern portion of the state—meaning it’s most commonly tied to communities outside the Minneapolis–St. Paul metro area.
For everyday phone users, this usually matters because people who live in the 218 region are likely to have local numbers that display 218. Even so, it’s worth remembering that phone number “origin” can be confusing today: number portability and modern carrier practices can change how a number behaves compared with where the person actually lives.
