Here’s a detail that always makes me smile in a dark way: the wooden chair Jakobs sat in still exists. It’s not on display, but it’s stored away. Imagine that—an ordinary piece of furniture that witnessed the Tower’s final moments of official violence.
You’ve probably got a chair in your house that’s seen some stuff. Maybe it’s where you sit to pay bills, or where your cat naps. That chair in the Tower is like a grumpy, silent grandparent who refuses to talk about the war. It’s a physical reminder that history isn’t just dates in a textbook; it’s things and people that feel almost familiar.
And honestly, who hasn’t sat in a chair and thought, “Well, this is where it all ends”? Jakobs probably thought that. But for us, it’s just a weird trivia fact to pull out at a party.

What This Means for You and Me
After Jakobs, the Tower stopped being a place of state execution. That’s huge. It means we live in a world where the Crown no longer kills people inside a thousand-year-old fortress. It’s a small step in a long, messy journey toward how we handle crime and punishment.
Think about your own “last times.” The last time you dialed a payphone. The last time you mailed a letter. Those moments feel insignificant until they’re gone. The Tower’s last execution is like that—a quiet, almost forgotten ending that changed everything.
So next time you’re scrolling through Netflix or staring at your phone, remember Josef Jakobs. He sat in a chair, eight guys aimed rifles, and one of them hit a target that closed a chapter in British history. It’s not a happy story, but it’s a real one—and it connects us to a past that wasn’t so long ago, filled with ordinary people in extraordinary, terrible moments.
And if you ever visit the Tower, spare a thought for that weird little chair. It’s probably the most uncomfortable piece of furniture in the world, and it has the biggest story to tell.
