Right now, as of today, no, there isn’t a full Tube strike happening across the network. But, and here’s the classic caveat, some lines might have planned engineering works or minor delays that feel just as annoying. Think of it like a surprise pop quiz—you didn’t study for it, but you’ll still have to deal with it.
If you’re reading this on a random Tuesday, chances are you can hop on the Victoria line without a hitch. But if it’s a day when a union has announced “action short of a strike”—like an overtime ban—you might see fewer trains and longer waits. It’s the transport equivalent of a “working from home” day for your morning commute: you’re still expected to show up, but everything takes a bit longer.
Why should you care? (Spoiler: your morning coffee depends on it)
Look, we all have that one friend who claims they “don’t use the Tube anyway.” They’re probably the same person who cycles in the rain and then complains about wet socks. For the rest of us, the Tube is the heartbeat of London life. A strike doesn’t just delay your journey—it messes with your entire day’s rhythm.
Imagine this: you’ve got a 9:30 meeting in Soho. You plan to leave at 8:45, grab a croissant, and stroll in feeling smug. But then you check the app and see “Part suspension on the Bakerloo line due to strikes.” Suddenly your croissant becomes a dry biscuit eaten on a packed bus. Your smugness evaporates faster than the steam off your tea. That’s why you care.
Strikes also affect everyone around you. Your barista might be late, so your flat white takes ten extra minutes. Your colleague who usually arrives fresh-faced might turn up looking like they’ve just wrestled a badger. It’s a collective grumpiness that spreads faster than gossip about the office kettle.
