Your local Express store—the one you dash into for milk at 10 PM—is usually your Bank Holiday hero. They often stay open, albeit with reduced hours, because they’re built for convenience. But don’t assume! I once rolled up to an Express on a Spring Bank Holiday only to find it dark, with a taped note saying “staff holidays.” Cheers for that, I grumbled.
Now for the big ones—the Superstores and Extra stores. These are the bank holiday wildcards. On Easter Sunday and Christmas Day, they are almost universally shut, as if the entire middle aisle took a collective vow of silence. On other bank holidays—like the May Day or August one—they’re often open, but with weird hours, like 9 AM to 6 PM instead of the usual 8 AM to 10 PM.
The “Check Online” Dance
Here’s the bit where I sound like your nagging aunt: check the website. I know, I know—you want a simple yes or no. But Tesco’s own store finder tool is surprisingly honest about this. Type in your postcode, and it will show you “Bank Holiday Opening Hours” in a bold, orange box. Use it. Ignoring it is how you end up staring at a closed automatic door with a bag of unfulfilled dreams.
Tesco August Bank Holiday 2026 opening times: What time are stores open
And don’t trust your memory from last year. Bank holidays shift, and so do Tesco’s policies. Easter Monday last year might have been fine, but this year they decided to “give staff the time off” (how dare they, right?). It’s a roll of the dice every single time.
