Phil Mitchell has been on the Square since 1990, which is longer than most of us have been alive—and certainly longer than any of his marriages. He’s outlived two brothers, seven marriages (I’m rounding up), and a liver transplant that he probably got from a murdered gangster. He is basically the human equivalent of a stubborn stain on a white carpet—impossible to remove, and you’re oddly fond of it.
So why are we even asking if he’s still there? Because the man keeps almost dying. Remember when he was shot, then had a heart attack, then crashed a car into a lake, then got beaten into a coma by a shovel-wielding teenager? It’s like the writers are playing “Whack-a-Mole” with his life expectancy. Spoiler: the mole always gets back up.
The Great Pause of 2026
Earlier this year, Phil took a wee break. The actor, Steve McFadden, decided to do a theatre run—probably to remind us he can emote without just flaring his nostrils. During his absence, the show had other characters talk about Phil like he was a distant legend, like Bigfoot or the last Blockbuster Video. Fans panicked. Was Phil dead? Did he finally achieve his dream of becoming a silent tree stump in Canada?
Nope. He came back. And when he returned, he didn’t even get a hero’s welcome—he walked into the Queen Vic, grunted, and immediately started threatening someone over a parking spot. It was beautiful. It was predictable. It was pure Phil.
