How to Get Sunflower Seeds

Because store-bought seeds are fine, but homegrown ones come with a story. You get to watch a towering, cheerful sunflower follow the sun all day, then harvest your own crunchy treasure. Plus, it’s a fantastic excuse to spend time outside—and who doesn’t need more of that?

Step 1: Pick Your Sunflower Champion

Not all sunflowers are created equal when it comes to seed production. You want the giant varieties like ‘Mammoth’ or ‘Russian Giant’—the ones that grow taller than your neighbor’s fence. Look for “confectionery” types bred for big, plump seeds, not the tiny ones meant for bird food.

Check the seed packet or catalog description. If it says “excellent for harvesting,” you’re golden. If it says “dwarf ornamental,” you’re getting cute flowers but hardly any snack-worthy seeds. Choose wisely, my friend.

Step 2: Plant Them Like a Boss

Sunflowers are thirsty for sunlight—like, a solid 6 to 8 hours a day. Pick a spot that’s sunny, well-drained, and has room for those roots to stretch. Plant seeds about an inch deep, spaced 6 to 12 inches apart (bigger spacing means bigger heads).

Water them regularly, but don’t drown them. They’re tough, not invincible. In about 70 to 90 days, you’ll see a giant yellow head towering above you, practically begging to be harvested. And that’s when the real fun begins.
