You can fly the Union Flag whenever you fancy. But the official advice says only in daylight, unless you put a light on it. A flag in the dark is like wearing sunglasses indoors—possible, but weird. And also illegal in some places. So, sun up = flag up. Sun down = flag down. Easy.
There are also special days when everyone flags up: the Queen’s birthday (or King’s, depending on the decade), Remembrance Sunday, St George’s Day, and the day England wins a football match. But don’t fly it on the day England loses a football match. That’s just rubbing salt in the wound. You might as well put a note on it saying “we tried.”
And never, ever fly a tatty flag. A frayed, faded Union Flag is a sad sight. It looks like it’s been through a war and lost. Replace it when it gets ragged. Flags are like friendships—if they’re threadbare, it’s time for a fresh one.
