Here’s where things get funny. If you’re a 6’4” construction worker in Arizona, you need to drink like a camel prepping for a desert crossing. If you’re a 5’2” librarian in Maine, you might be fine with a couple of glasses and a bowl of oatmeal. The “average person” doesn’t exist, so stop comparing your thirst to your neighbor’s.
Exercise, humidity, and even your sex play a role. Men generally need more because they tend to have more muscle, which holds more water. Muscle is basically a water sponge. Fat tissue? Not so much. So if you’re jacked, congrats—you’re a walking hydration tank.
The Thirst-Deception Tan
Here’s a weird fact: your thirst mechanism actually weakens as you age. So if you’re over 65, you might feel fine when you’re actually parched. That’s why older folks sometimes end up in the hospital for dehydration. It’s not their fault—their internal “hey, drink!” alarm is on the fritz.
For everyone else, just listen to your mouth. Thirst is a pretty reliable indicator. You don’t need a $50 water bottle with fancy LED lights telling you to sip. Unless that makes you happy, in which case, hydrate in style, my friend.
