Phil didn’t just win a few games; he turned darts into his personal cash machine. We’re talking 16 World Championships. That’s like winning your local pub quiz sixteen times in a row, but instead of a pint and a bag of crisps, you get a cheque that makes your eyes water. Each of those titles came with a six-figure prize, and that was just the tip of the dartboard.
He also pocketed prize money from the World Matchplay, the Grand Slam, and the Premier League. The man won over £11 million in prize money alone during his career. That’s more than you’d earn if you worked every single day since the 1980s at a job that pays you in solid gold and free doughnuts.
The sponsorship side hustle
You know how your mate Dave always has a branded polo shirt from his company? Phil’s had a few of those, too. His deal with Target Darts was a big one. Imagine getting paid to stick your name on something you already use. That’s like getting paid a huge bonus just for wearing your favourite hoodie. It’s lovely, really.
He also had long-term partnerships with Unicorn and others. These contracts didn’t just involve a free set of darts and a thumbs-up. We’re talking hundreds of thousands of pounds every year. So while you’re haggling over the price of a pint, Phil was signing papers that made his accountant do a little dance.
