You may mutter, “$80 for an hour of driving? That’s more than my therapist charges.” And you’d be right—until you remember that driving instructors risk their lives sitting next to panicked teenagers. They pay for commercial insurance, vehicle maintenance, and their own training. Not to mention the emotional labor of staying calm when you almost hit a squirrel. That’s worth something.
Still, I’ve seen prices hit $200 per hour for specialized lessons—like defensive driving courses or truck license prep. Ouch. But ask yourself: is your safety worth a few extra bucks? (Spoiler: yes.)
Money-Saving Hacks (Because You Deserve a Break)
Want to lower the cost? Buy a package. Done, we covered that. Also, check if your school offers a “student discount” or referrals. I saved $50 once just because I mentioned a friend’s name. Shameless? Maybe. Effective? Absolutely.
Another trick: practice with a licensed adult between lessons. Use that time to nail basics so your paid lesson focuses on harder stuff—like merging onto a highway while not crying. That way, you need fewer total lessons. Math, baby.
