Let’s be honest: the Gatwick Express is the the Gucci of airport transfers. It’s sleek, fast, and makes you feel like you’re doing something fancy. You board, sit in a cushioned seat, and watch the other stations whiz by while sipping a flat white that cost more than your actual ticket.
But here’s the thing: it’s not the only game in town. The Thameslink train from St. Pancras or Blackfriars is cheaper, but it’s like taking the local bus instead of an Uber. You’ll get there, but you’ll stop at every little town that looks like a postcard from 1975. The Gatwick Express is the fastest option from Victoria – a non-stop 30-minute dash to the terminal.
I once took the Thameslink to save a fiver, and I ended up stuck behind a herd of school kids doing a karaoke of “Despacito” during rush hour. That £5 saving? I spent it on therapy. The Gatwick Express is your escape from that kind of chaos.
The Real Cost: Your Sanity
If you’re running late, the price tag becomes irrelevant. You’d pay £100 just to not miss your flight to Ibiza. In that moment, the Express is less a train and more a time machine. You’ll throw your Oyster card at the machine and whisper, “Take my money, just take it.”

But if you’re a planner – the kind of person who arrives at the airport four hours early – you might question the value. A cunning trick: buy your ticket online at least 24 hours in advance. You can snag a single for as low as £17.50. That’s the difference between a sad airport pretzel and a decent meal at Pret.
Also, remember the group discounts. If you’re travelling with two mates, you can get a “Gatwick Express Group Save” that brings the per-person cost down to about £15. That’s cheaper than a round of mojitos, and it won’t give you a hangover.
