Here’s where it gets personal—directly to you, reading this. Think about the nearest tree outside your window. That one tree provides about $195 worth of air conditioning, stormwater control, and air pollution removal every year. That’s money not coming out of your wallet. Unless somebody chops it down for a parking lot. Then you, the taxpayer, get to pay for the consequences.
So maybe we should stop thinking of the Earth as a $5 quadrillion piggy bank we can smash open. Because spoiler alert: there’s no bank to deposit the money in after we smash it. The “worth” is actually the value of continuing to live here without having to build a giant, leaky space bubble.

What Would You Do With the Money?
Let’s say you actually got a check for $5 quadrillion for the planet. What would you do? Buy a yacht the size of Alaska? Maybe. But then you’d realize you just sold the ocean that yacht floats on. Oops.
Economists call this the “paradox of value.” Diamonds are expensive because they’re rare. Water is cheap because it’s abundant—until it isn’t. The Earth is priceless because it’s irreplaceable and everything depends on it. So any number you slap on it is either too high or too low. Mostly too low.
Remember that succulent I nearly killed? It’s still alive, by the way. I calculated its net worth based on the joy it brings me and the absurd amount of guilt I’d feel if it died. Technically, that plant is worth infinite dollars to me. The whole planet? Even more.
So next time you’re stuck in traffic or doom-scrolling, take a breath. That very breath cost you nothing. But if we had to pay the Earth for it, at her market rate—around $33 trillion a year—you’d be bankrupt in a week. We are the richest freeloaders in the universe. Try not to mess it up.
