If you live in Miami or Los Angeles, you’re in luck—and in trouble. Tres leches is everywhere there, so competition keeps prices reasonable. You’ll often find a generous slice for $4 or $5. But if you’re in a small town in the Midwest? That same slice might be $7 or $8 as a “specialty” item.

It’s basic economics, but also kind of unfair, right? Like finding a taco truck in Nebraska that charges double just for being exotic. I see you, Nebraska.
Homemade: the wild card
Listen, you can also make this at home. And the cost? About $10 to $15 for a whole cake. That’s if you already have eggs, vanilla, and sugar. The three milks—evaporated, condensed, and heavy cream—are cheap, like $2 each. So is a box of cake mix, if you cheat (and I always cheat).
But here’s the catch: time. Tres leches needs to soak overnight. It’s a commitment. You have to plan. You have to wait. And then you have to resist eating it all at 2 a.m. (I have failed this test many times.)
