You’ll also need a passport photo, which costs about $15 at a pharmacy or post office. Don’t try to take it on your phone in bad lighting—trust me, I looked like a startled owl in my last one. And if you need to mail it overnight, that’s another $25 or so for priority shipping.
Add it up for a first-timer: $165 (application) plus $15 (photo) equals roughly $180. For a renewal, you’re looking at $130 plus photo. It’s the price of a good pair of sneakers that you’ll wear for years, but these sneakers take you to Tokyo.

The “Oops, I Need It Now” Factor
Life happens. Your cousin announces a destination wedding, or your boss offers a sudden work trip to London. If you need that passport in under 6 weeks, pony up for expedited service ($60 extra). That brings a renewal to $190 total, but you get it in 2-3 weeks.
I’ll be real with you: waiting for a passport is like watching water boil. But having it in hand feels like winning a small lottery. You can book that flight, pack that bag, and breathe easier knowing you’re not stuck on the couch.
