Before you mortgage your house for soft water, try the "Sudsy Finger Test". Put a drop of liquid soap on your hand and rub your palms together—if you get barely any foam, your water is hard. If you get zero foam, your water is so hard it could probably be used as a substitute for concrete mix.
Here’s the kicker: some cities have water so soft it’s practically melted butter. Check your local hardness level (often measured in grains per gallon). Anything above 10 grains per gallon is a strong argument for buying one. Between 7 and 10? You might be fine with a cheaper "conditioner" that uses magnets and hope.
