Most soap actors are members of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA), which sets minimums. For a five-day shoot, a day player (guest star) earns around $1,000 a day. If you’re a recurring character—popping up twice a month—you’re looking at $20,000 to $40,000 yearly. That’s before agents take their 10%, and taxes take… well, a lot. Side note: the union negotiates residuals for reruns, but soaps rarely air reruns. So much for that extra cash.
Then there are the megastars. Think Susan Lucci (Erica Kane on All My Children) or Eric Braeden (Victor Newman on The Young and the Restless). These legends can command $5,000 to $10,000 per episode—or more. Lucci reportedly made $1 million a year at her peak. But here’s the kicker: most actors stay for a decade-plus, and that long-term job security is the real gold. It’s like a cozy, dramatic 9-to-5, except your coworkers might poison your character’s coffee.
Are Soap Opera Stars Rich? Find Out How Much They Make
Why the Pay Gap is So Wide
Here’s where it gets juicy: soap operas film 250+ episodes a year, compared to a primetime show’s 22. That’s a marathon, not a sprint. Actors work brutal hours—sometimes 12-hour days—with minimal breaks. Yet, a primetime star on a hit series can earn $100,000 per episode. So why do soap actors accept less? Job stability, my friend. A soap can run for decades; “canceled” isn’t in the yearly vocabulary. (Unless you’re on a show that ended in 2013. Sorry, As the World Turns fans.)
But the real paycheck secret happens behind the scenes. Some actors license their likeness for merchandise or do local commercials—that’s where the side hustle shines. Others teach acting classes or write books about playing vixens and villains. And if you’re on a soap for 20 years? You’re likely earning six figures via residuals from foreign sales and streaming rights. Feeling a little better for them now?
