Tap water in most developed countries is already treated. It’s safe. So please, stop boiling your tap water for ten minutes “just in case.” You’re wasting energy and making your tea taste flat.
If there’s a boil water advisory in your area? Then yes. Bring it to a rolling boil for one minute (or three at altitude). That’s the official playbook. No need to turn your kitchen into a steam room.
But what about microwaves? Are they cheating?
Microwaves can boil water too, but be careful. Superheated water is a thing—it can explode in your face if you nuke it too long. Stick to a stove or kettle. It’s safer, and you won’t have to clean angry water off your ceiling.
Also, never boil water in a microwave if it’s for baby formula. Just don’t. Hot spots can burn tiny mouths.
