If you’re training to become a therapist, your CBT qualification is different. Generally, it doesn’t have a built-in “use-by” date. You get your diploma, and it’s yours forever—like a tattoo, but less painful and more useful.
However, to actually practise as a therapist, you need to maintain continuous professional development (CPD). That’s not a “validity” in the traditional sense, but it means you can’t just pass in 2010 and then wing it for fifteen years. Your knowledge needs top-ups, like a phone software update.
So, your CBT accreditation does not expire, but your credibility does if you stop learning. Every few years, you need to show you’re still up to speed. It’s like being a driver who never reads the highway code—technically legal, but terrifying for passengers.
What About Other “CBT” Acronyms?
There’s also CBT for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as a treatment—not a qualification. If you’re a patient doing CBT with a therapist, there’s no expiry date on the skills you learn. Once you finish, you keep those tools forever. You might need a refresher, but the certificate of completion? It’s a souvenir, not a contract.
Then there’s CBT in the military (Close Bombardment Training), which is valid only until you forget how to aim. Or CBT for computer-based training—usually valid until the software updates and you can’t log in. Honestly, the acronym is a mess, but we love it anyway.
