Grass, dirt, and sand are kinder to young paws than concrete. Think of concrete as the hardwood floor of the outdoor world—it’s unyielding and heats up fast.
Until your pup is at least six months old, mix up their walking surfaces. Let them romp on grass more often than pavement.
This variety also helps their joint development, since concrete is harder on growing bones. Your vet will thank you for the smart planning.
What About Hot Summer Pavements?
Here’s a little story: I once took my friend’s Jack Russell for a “quick walk” on a 90-degree day. After two minutes, he started hopping like a rabbit. I felt awful—and learned my lesson.
On hot days, walk early in the morning or late in the evening. If that’s not possible, stick to shaded grass or invest in dog booties (yes, they look hilarious, but they work).
