Don’t trust the date. Trust your senses. Here’s your simple, three-step bread inspection.
Step 1: The Squeeze Test
Pick up the loaf. Give it a gentle squeeze. Does it feel soft and springy? That’s a green light. Does it feel hard as a rock or crumbly? That bread is on its way out, but it’s not dead yet. We’ll fix that rockiness later.
Step 2: The Mold Scan
Look closely. Mold is the real enemy. It usually shows up as fuzzy green, white, or black spots. One tiny spot does not ruin the whole loaf. Cut off that spot plus a one-inch radius around it. The rest is fine. But if you see mold on multiple slices or deep in the bag? Toss the whole thing. Don’t be a hero.
Step 3: The Smell Check
Give it a good sniff. Fresh bread smells like a bakery. Bad bread smells like a damp basement. If it smells sour, funky, or chemically, do not eat it. Your nose is smarter than any printed date.
