Boats can’t just crash through the barrier when it’s up, so a thrilling traffic light system controls river traffic. If the gate is closing, every skipper has to wait like a driver at a really important railway crossing. And fish? The barrier has special gates that let some water through to keep the river’s ecology from freaking out, which means salmon can still commute to work. In 2019, a harbor seal named “Scruffy” famously swam through an open gate and got stuck on the wrong side, causing a minor media frenzy. Apparently, even marine mammals don’t read the sign that says, “Barrier Operations in Progress.”
