You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need a degree in theology. You don’t even need to be Catholic yet—but that part does matter eventually. Most orders require you to be a confirmed Catholic for at least a year before entering.
You also need to be over 18 (obviously) and in decent health. Not Olympic-level fitness, just able to do a bit of gardening and walk up stairs without wheezing. And you must be single, with no dependent children. The Church is strict about that bit.
Debt and Loose Ends
You can’t enter with a mountain of credit card debt. It’s a practical thing: a convent isn’t a debt-counselling service. So pay off your loans first. Join a convent debt-free, like a minimalist bride. Also, sort out ex-boyfriends or girlfriends—be honest with them. They’ll understand if you’re sincere.
Oh, and you don’t have to wear a full habit from day one. Many modern sisters wear jeans and a cross. You can keep your Dr. Martens. It’s 2026, darling.
