Here’s a twist that would make a crime novelist jealous: The lorry was carrying a legitimate cargo of frozen chips. That’s right. The plan was to hide £32 million worth of cocaine underneath a shipment of potato products. I can only imagine the conversation: “Don’t worry, the sniffer dogs will be distracted by the smell of McCain’s.” It’s a brave new world of criminal logistics.

Another surprising detail? The arrest was a joint effort between the National Crime Agency and the Border Force. These are the folks who usually deal with things like illegal immigrants and tax evasion, not a massive pile of Bolivian marching powder. Their press release was probably the most exciting thing they’ve written all year, right next to the office birthday card for Steve in accounting.
The Cops Are Not Amused
The police, of course, are absolutely thrilled with themselves. A spokesperson for the National Crime Agency gave a very stern statement about “removing dangerous drugs from our streets.” They also mentioned the men are “now facing the consequences of their actions.” Translation: these guys are going to be eating prison porridge for a very long time. I’d like to think the cops high-fived each other after that press conference.
Let’s be real for a moment: smuggling cocaine by ferry is like trying to rob a bank by walking in the front door during business hours. It’s bold, it’s stupid, and it’s exactly the kind of silly mistake that makes for excellent dinner party conversation. These men were not criminal masterminds. They were five guys who thought they’d outsmart the British justice system with a truck full of frozen chips and a dream.
