Not all F-engineers were flawless. Thomas Midgley Jr. was a mechanical engineer who invented Freon for refrigeration and leaded gasoline. Both were disasters. Leaded gas poisoned the planet. Freon ate the ozone layer.
But here’s the twist: he also invented a self-rocking hospital bed to help polio patients. He later got tangled in the ropes of that bed and died. His inventions quite literally haunted him.
Lesson learned: F can stand for “Forgotten Fiascos” just as much as “Fantastic.”
Fabricating the Future with Fiber Optics
Narinder Singh Kapany was an Indian-American engineer. His first name begins with N, but we’ll cheat because he’s famous for F: fiber optics. He is the Father of Fiber Optics.
In the 1950s, he figured out how to bend light through thin glass fibers. Today, that sends your Instagram photos at the speed of light. Without him, we’d be mailing memes.
He also loved sculpture and painting. He was an artist who wove light. How’s that for a fun cocktail fact?
