The Department for Work and Pensions has flicked the switch for a wave of £25 payments, hitting areas where the average temperature has dropped to, or below, 0°C for seven consecutive days. Think of it as winter’s version of a loyalty points bonus—except the currency is pure, non-taxable cash. Hundreds of postcodes across Scotland, the North of England, and the Midlands are currently in the bonus round.
This isn’t a one-off; the scheme has been running for decades, but it feels like we notice it more now because social media lights up with “My heating’s on, my purse is happy” energy. The key detail? You don’t need to apply. The money simply appears in your account if you’re eligible, usually within 14 working days. It’s like finding a tenner in an old coat pocket, but better—and government-issued.
