The party was founded by a man named David “Screaming Lord Sutch” Sutch, who was a rock star and a professional weirdo. He started the party as a joke, but also as a way to mock the absurdity of other politicians taking themselves far too seriously.
Legend has it that the party’s first policy was to give everyone a free banana to cure the national blues. They also famously promised to put a statue of a dead dog in every town. I’m not making this up—their manifesto was a piece of art.
And while Lord Sutch sadly passed away in 1999, the party didn’t die with him. In a plot twist that would make Shakespeare jealous, it just got loonier.
So, Who Runs It Now? A Cat? A Duck?
Current leader Alan “Howling Laud” Hope is a former army officer and teacher who definitely doesn’t look like a loon—until he opens his mouth. He took over the reins and has kept the flag of delightful chaos flying high.
The party’s current manifesto includes gems like: “Compulsory 20-minute naps for everyone after lunch” and “Making the M1 motorway a figure-eight so we never have to stop.” You can’t argue with logic like that.
They even have a policy to replace all traffic cones with jelly. Is it practical? No. Would it make traffic jams a lot more fun? Absolutely.
