Now, I know what you're thinking, "what's the worst that could happen?" Well, let me tell you, I once saw someone try to sneak a massive backpack onto a plane, and it was like trying to stuff a giraffe into a shoebox. The flight attendants were not amused, and the poor guy had to gate-check his beloved backpack.
On the other hand, if you're planning to check your backpack, make sure you label it clearly and remove any valuables. You don't want your favorite snacks or chargers to get lost or damaged during the journey. And, of course, don't forget to lock it, or you might come back to find that your backpack has been reorganized by some overzealous baggage handlers.
But, what about liquids? Can you take them in your backpack? The answer is yes, but only if they're in containers of 3.4 ounces or less and fit in a clear, quart-sized zip-top bag. Anything more, and you'll have to check your backpack or dispose of the excess. I mean, who needs that much shampoo anyway, right?
