The Christmas specials always deliver a perfect mix of medical weirdness and festive drama. This year, expect a horse with a seasonal cough that’s actually a metaphor for something, or a pregnant cow that refuses to cooperate until Tristan sings “Silent Night.” The real star is always the weather. It snows so hard you’d think the show’s budget was funded by a snowplow lobby. Characters get stuck in a ditch, lose a boot, and almost sacrifice a mince pie to the gods of hypothermia.
Playful exaggeration: I’m convinced the producers have a secret quota. Every episode must feature at least one scene where James wipes mud off his face while looking noble. And here’s a surprising fact: the real James Herriot (Alfred Wight) wrote his books longhand on a kitchen table. No typewriter. No word processor. Just pure, brilliant, cow-themed genius. He probably didn’t even have a mince pie to comfort him.

Why We Can’t Stop Watching
Let’s be real: All Creatures Great and Small is the TV equivalent of a warm bath. It’s predictable in the best way. You know the cranky farmer with the leaky barn will have a change of heart. You know James will save the day, but how he does it—usually covered in mud and manure—is the joy. The show is a masterclass in quiet joy. No explosions, no murder, just a calm, steady stream of British people being polite while wrestling pigs.
And the animals? They’re all trained professionals, but one unscripted moment—like a goat headbutting Siegfried—makes the whole thing even better. Surprising fact: The show actually inspired a real spike in veterinary school applications in the UK. Apparently, watching Nicholas Ralph’s cheekbones while he stitches a sheep’s leg is career-inspiring. Who knew?
