Okay, let’s talk about Captain Hook. Jason Isaacs doesn’t just play Hook; he inhabits him with a slimy, theatrical glee. This is a man who monologues to a ticking crocodile and genuinely enjoys his own cruelty. But here’s the twist—Isaacs also plays Mr. Darling, Wendy’s father. It’s a genius trick, reminding us that Hook is just a grown-up version of a scared boy. Watch him when he touches his own missing hand; there’s a flicker of real grief under the powdered wig.
And the Lost Boys? They’re a ragtag mob of feral urchins, not clean-faced Disney extras. They have mud under their nails and a survival instinct that’s both endearing and a little scary. The youngest, Tootles (played by a very young Harry Newell), has this heartbreaking moment where he almost shoots Wendy. It’s played for drama, not laughs, and it lands like a punch to the gut.

The Fairy Fight and the Kiss
Ludivine Sagnier as Tinker Bell is a small miracle. She doesn’t speak a word of English in the film (just tinkling bells and grunts), but you understand every jealous, petty, fiercely loyal thought she has. She is furious when Peter doesn’t notice her, and you almost feel sorry for her until she tries to get Wendy killed. Almost. Side note: That scene where she drinks the poison? It’s absolutely brutal for a PG movie. Sagnier sold that silent agony like a Shakespearean tragedy.
Now, the elephant in the Neverland nursery: the kiss. Peter and Wendy’s dynamic in 2003 is weirdly intense. It’s not romantic in a typical way; it’s more like two lonely souls recognizing each other. There’s a moment where they almost—almost—kiss, and you feel the weight of it. Sumpter and Hurd-Wood had an onscreen chemistry that’s so raw it’s uncomfortable. It’s not “cute”; it’s the tension of a child realizing they might want to grow up after all.
